Definition

The Demographic Diversity Index is the probability that two randomly selected residents belong to different racial or ethnic groups, following the U.S. Census Bureau's published Diversity Index. A value of 72 means about a 72% chance that two residents belong to different groups; 0 means everyone belongs to one group.

Display policy: research

Why this index is handled differently

  • It is descriptive. More or less diversity does not make a place better or worse, so it is never ranked, given a peer percentile, color-coded or labeled "excellent".
  • The National Association of REALTORS® Code of Ethics says REALTORS® should not volunteer information about the racial, religious or ethnic composition of neighborhoods, and HUD regulates discriminatory housing advertising and steering, including through digital platforms and proxies.
  • Every API response marks this index display_policy: "research". CityCites does not show it in consumer listing integrations by default, and group-level shares are available only to partners; each partner's compliance and legal team decides whether and how to use it.

Methodology follows the U.S. Census Bureau Diversity Index.

Limitations

  • Survey estimates have margins of error that are large for small cities.
  • Broad groups hide much variety within each group.
